In late 1863, the New Zealand government requested troops to aid inside the invasion of the Waikato province from the Māori. Promised settlement on confiscated land, over 2,500 Australians (over 50 % of whom had been from Victoria) were recruited to variety four Waikato Regiments. Other Australians turned scouts in the organization of Forest Range
